Why you should install CCTV.

Why you should install CCTV.

Why you should install CCTV.

Recently I have been sent a lot of requests to install CCTV on home and business properties. More and more people are learning about the capability of checking in on and looking after their properties and possessions.

You all know what CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) is, but did you realise that you can install it on your property and check in on it from your personal devices from anywhere in the world by just simply downloading an app? Great, right?!

The benefits of installing CCTV on your home or business property.

More people are looking to install CCTV to give them a sense of comfort knowing that their property and even loved ones are safe, with a simple click of an app you have the ability to check in whether it be day or night to make sure all is well. Other benefits of installing CCTV include the deterring of criminal activity, a burglar is less likely to target your property if they spot a camera(s). An intruder will obviously not want to attract attention to themselves and in a article published by The Guardian back in August 2017 they interviewed a panel of former burglars who said that “thieves are opportunists wandering the streets and would avoid difficult break-ins that would attract attention” the panel went on to add that “The most effective deterrents for home burglaries and car theft were CCTV cameras”. And, finally it could reduce your property insurance (well now you’re less likely to be a target). There are so many reasons as to why you should install CCTV but there are also a lot of things to consider as well before you go ahead and purchase a system.

What to consider when looking for a suitable CCTV package.

When considering installing CCTV on your home or business space there are a couple of things to consider such as the placement of the cameras. As a result of the Surveillance Camera Code Practice of 2013 which was issued by the Secretary of State under section 30 of the act .

As most CCTV cameras will capture footage that stray the outside of your residential and business properties boundaries there are some things that you will have to do in order to comply with GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) that came in to force back in May 2018 to replace the Data Protection Act 1998 which include:

  • Displaying clear signage that you are using CCTV cameras on your property;

  • Only use recorded footage for security reasons;

  • Do not release the footage to third parties;

  • And, only keep the footage for as long as necessary.

Other considerations you should think about before installing CCTV is what type you should go with whether it works for you as a wired CCTV or Wireless CCTV installation.

Wired CCTV:

Wired CCTV installation is probably one of the most cheapest and traditional form of CCTV installation. When you have purchased the package that suits your needs best (this could range from 1 up to 16 cameras) it is case of connecting the cameras with a wire to a monitor with the systems requiring internet connection. The wired CCTV is considered very reliable and is usually installed at larger properties including business spaces and warehouses. You will also need to purchase a recording device either a DVR or NVR to store all the footage on. One thing to note with this type of installation is when there is a power outage this will affect the security system. Luckily though for us we don’t have many power outages.

Wireless CCTV:

An alternative to that of wired CCTV is wireless security. The main difference between the two are that the images are transmitted wirelessly through a WiFi network. Another difference is that the Wireless cameras are much more flexible in the placement location because there are no cables that are running from them making the system a lot more easier to put up and take down however, a wireless system will only allow you up to 4 cameras. One of the downsides to wireless security systems is that interference from other devices may affect the clarity and a make the system a lot less reliable than that of wired CCTV.

If you are thinking about purchasing and installing CCTV on your property whether it be on your home or at a business space there are a lot of things to think about before committing your budget to a decent security system from how many cameras you require; to the storage; the cameras clarity; if it has motion sensors and much more…. this is where Sure ICT Solutions LTD can help you. We can come out and visit the property and help you decide on what system will work best for you.
